A Tip To Saving Gas In The Winter

January 24, 2010 · Posted in Car News · Comment

Most of the East is blanketed in snow right now and many of us have to wake up in the morning, put on your snow boots and trek outside to warm up your car. Many people do it as they are having breakfast and let the car warm up a good 10 to 15 minutes. But is this sufficient? Are you saving gas or comfort here?

In all practicality you only need to warm up your engine a good 2-3 minutes. This is just enough time to head up the oil that lubricates your engine. Anything extra, just wastes gas. Idling your car can consume a good percentage of your daily gas quota. So instead of turning on your car and walking away to go shower or eat breakfast, consider all the gas your are wasting.

Instead, spend a couple minutes scraping ice and snow off your vehicle and then turning on your car. Wear gloves and a hat since your car will be cold when you drive out, but know that you are saving big bucks which is what you need during this recession.
